ANTIQ. GR. Manteau sans manches d'homme et de femme, enroulé ou drapé autour du corps de diverses façons. L'himation (...) morceau de drap carré qui, partant du bras gauche, auquel il est attaché, passe sur les reins, et ensuite au-dessus ou au-dessous du bras droit, pour venir s'enrouler autour du bras gauche (Ch. BLANC, Gramm. arts dessin, 1876, p. 396). La jeune femme de Tanagra (...) serrée dans les plis de son himation (A. FRANCE, Étui nacre, Pt soldat plomb, 1892, p. 302).

♦ Didact. (antiq. grecque). Sorte de manteau sans manches.
0 (…) l'himation ionien (…) complète la parure de fête. C'est un carré d'étoffe dont l'un des bords, serré en forme de bourrelet, passe sous le bras gauche, traversant obliquement la poitrine. Ce vêtement s'ajuste sur l'épaule droite au moyen d'agrafes; les bouts du manteau remontent en une masse épaisse, creusée de plis verticaux, serrés et réguliers, inégaux en longueur et dessinant ainsi à leur extrémité une ligne sinueuse qui monte, descend encore pour suivre le bord de l'étoffe repliée sur elle-même par un savant tuyautage.
